Episode 184 – The History of Firesign, Part 2, with Phil Proctor

COV_184_SD

Phil Proctor is back, with the history of the Firesign Theatre!  This time, we’re joined by Firesign archivist Taylor Jessen and Jeremy Guskin to talk about Waiting for the Electrician or Someone Like Him.  It was a good, long conversation, so I cut it into two parts.  There’s also video of the whole conversation, which you can watch below, and find at youtube.com/comedyonvinyl.

Episode 183 – Travis McElroy on Reiner and Brooks – 2000 and One Years

COV_183_SD (1)

Your middlest brother, Travis McElroy, joins me this week ostensibly to talk about an admittedly great and not-often-enough-spoken-of-hyphen album, but we get off on a tangent when we discover Blazing Saddles is both of our favorite film.  But we come back.  I promise.

Episode 182 – Jeff Morris on Bad News

COV_182_SD

Dr. Demento’s archivist, memory acrobat and comedy lover, Jeff Morris picked a US re-release of an album by the UK “group” Bad News, featuring two members of The Young Ones and two other English comedians in an early-80s rock music parody that paralleled This Is Spinal Tap.

Episode 58 – Eric Martin on Weird Al – UHF

Eric Martin

This week I sit down with the mahogany-voiced Eric Martin of the This American Wife podcast and Web Series.  It’s quickly becoming one of my favorite things, so it was exciting that Eric picked a Weird Al album we haven’t done before.  Apologies for the hot sound in advance, but I think it’s worth it.

Episode 55 – Andrew Bergman on Blazing Saddles

AndrewBergmanMy favorite film of all time is Blazing saddles.  In fact, there used to be a subway/bus poster for the film hanging where I now hang my LPs.  There’s plenty around Fort Awesome Studios to indicate my love for this film and anyone who had anything to do with it.  So, only a few months after getting to play Hedley Lamarr onstage, I was honored to speak with Andrew Bergman by phone from New York about my favorite film, which started from a kernel of an idea, turned into a novella that I desperately want to read, and became a classic, sparking off the career of my  favorite director.  I had a wonderful time, and Andrew was a super-classy, nice, insightful writer – everything you’d hope.  Enjoy.

Episode 23 – Weird Al – Even Worse – With Rachel Bloom

Yes, he’s a God.  He’s the nicest man on the planet, and I’ve shaken his hand.  Yes, you needed to know that.  This is one of his tightest albums, containing some of his best originals.

She makes funny songs like “Fuck Me, Ray Bradbury” and “I Steal Pets,” and is about to write for a sketch show on Cartoon Network.  She’s Rachel Bloom and she was kind enough to sit down and talk with us about the man, the myth, the (formerly) mustachioed, Weird Al.  Also, dreams and dicks.
