Episode 40 – James Urbaniak on The Odd Couple Sings

This week, we’re visited again by James Urbaniak.  The album?  “The Odd Couple Sings.”  One of the many from the period you’ll now find filed under “personality” or “oddities,” if you can find it at all, this album is a snapshot of pop culture of the 70s.  This was what multi-platform looked like at the time, and there’s been nothing since.  Enjoy!

Episode 37 – Mike Phirman on Weird Al – Dare to Be Stupid

This week I talk with the awesome Mike Phirman about Weird Al’s “Dare to Be Stupid.”  We had a grand old time talking about the great Mr. Yankovic and about Mike’s own great comedy music.  Listen and enjoy.

Episode 36 – Katie Levine on Jerry Seinfeld – Im Telling You For the Last Time

This week, I talk to Nerdist podcast producer Katie Levine.  She wanted to talk about Jerry Seinfeld’s “I’m Telling You For the Last Time.”  I hadn’t heard it in forever, but I’m glad she brought me back to it.  When not producing shows, Katie also has her own awesome podcast, Save it For Air.

Episode 35 – Mo Fathelbab on Chris Rock – Bigger and Blacker

Listening to Chris Rock’s “Bigger and Blacker” is, according to this week’s guest, listening to someone at the top of their game.  It’s hard to argue with.  It’s a strange mix of standup and sketch, but Chris Rock manages to make it work, turning a whole lot of people (like myself) around.  Before this, I knew him mostly as the guy with some guest spots on “In Living Color.”  After this, I got it.
This week’s guest is Mo Fathelbab.  He runs NerdMelt – Chris Hardwick’s Nerdist Theater at Meltdown Comics – and is the co-creator of “Nerdterns,” a new webseries coming to the Nerdist Channel in August/September.  He sat down with me in the back of NerdMelt to talk about this album and his comedy influences.  A fun time was had by both.  Mostly me.

Episode 34 – Zero Mostel Sings Songs My Mother Never Sang – With Jeremy Guskin!

If that cover doesn’t say it all, I don’t know if we’ll be able to do it justice.  This is a “bargain bin” episode, where I find a rare or odd album and just wing it with a regular or guest.  This week, the wonderful Jeremy Guskin talks with me about a mutual favorite.  Zero Mostel was a genius in a lot of ways, none of which were necessarily singing.  That said, he manages to carry this awesome novelty album by at least being able to carry a tune.  He just was not a guy you could put in front of a microphone or camera and expect normalcy.  It would make no sense.  This is one I would definitely seek out, though you can’t get it on anything but vinyl.

Baby Episode #5

Oh no!  Is something wrong with the space-time continuum?  No.  I’ve just been completing my first children’s book and we’re busy editing.  We have a bunch of awesome episodes coming up.  Here I tell you more.

Thanks!

Episode 32 – Jonah Ray on Emo Philips – E Equals MO Squared

It’s been a long time coming, but Jonah Ray is finally on the podcast.  It’s highly unlikely you’ve never heard of The Nerdist, but if you haven’t, it’s pretty much the best podcast out there.  As a standup, vinyl comedy was part of his education, and Jonah talks to us this week about Emo Philips’ brilliant E=MO Squared.  We also get in a little talky-talk about his new 10″ white vinyl record “Hello, Mr. Magic Plane Person, Hello.”  It was a HUGE thrill.

I forgot to admit this to Jonah, but I was – for a brief period – under the misapprehension that the term “emo,” usually used to torture nerds with extra hair, was somehow linked back to Emo Philips.  Like Jonah, my first exposure to Emo’s weirdness was the classic Weird Al vehicle UHF.  It wasn’t until Jonah’s recommendation that I first listened to what is now some of my favorite wordplay and weird character comedy.  I’m over simplifying it, but it is wonderfully brilliant and worth a listen, especially if you’ve already sampled the more “traditional” fare, like Cosby, Carlin or Newhart.

Episode 28 – Matt Knudsen on Andrew Dice Clay – Dice Rules

If it were any other album, I’d apologize for there being only one clip in this episode.  But this album is not what you might call the greatest of the great.  But it has a special place in Matt Knudsen’s heart.

You’ve seen him on Conan and all over your TV.  Matt Knudsen has a remarkably clean act for a guy who wants to talk about Dice, and that’s what makes this such a fun episode – it’s not his act.  Listen to Matt talk about his influences, comedy in general, and a little about Dice.

Episode 26 – Jordan Morris on TMBG – Flood

They may not be comedians, but the biting wit of They Might Be Giants makes them the perfect subject for this latest episode.  Talk of dark humor abounds in this episode, featuring the great Jordan Morris, who holds one of the Fort Awesome cats, Raine, in the photo to the right.

Episode 25 – Die Hard, A Drinking Game

Anthony Lerner as John McClane

Joe Nicchi (Karl), Anthony Lerner (John McClane) and Natalie Lynch (Holly McClane) in 'Die Hard, A Drinking Game'

Once a month, I’m part of an undeniably awesome theater experience.  Since November of 2011, “A Drinking Game” has taken live  stage readings of the best films of the 80s and combined them with a custom drinking game for each film.  Not only does the audience drink along – so do the actors.  It’s been so successful, it recently spun off into a satellite show in Minneapolis.  I’m so lucky to get to work with these people, that I wanted you to meet as many of them as I could squeeze in before we had to get started this last Saturday during “Die Hard,” in which I played Hans Gruber.

Brett Schlank - A Drinking Game's Emcee

Brett Schlank - A Drinking Game's Emcee

First up is Brett Schlank.  Co-creator (with Natalie Lynch, pictured above) of A Drinking Game and one of my favorite people, Brett comes from a long line of entertainers.  He talks with me for a few minutes about Bob and Doug McKenzie’s “Great White North.”

Next is Joe Nicchi.  Not only is he hilarious, but his experience with stand-up comedy is unique – he practically grew up in his father’s comedy club.  He talks about Mitch Hedburg, being chauffeur to the comics, and what it’s like to see the best comics we’ve never heard of.

Anthony Lerner is the star of this month’s show.  He and I were at least twice enemies – he as Biff Tannen and I as Marty McFly, he as Westley and I as Vizzini & Count Rugen.  This week, it happens again, as we square off and he sends me to my death that will catch up with him two drinking games later.  Anthony opens up about his love of Bill Cosby and comedy in general, as well as having to say “fuck” a lot.

Alex Salem as Al Powell

Alex Salem as Al Powell

I met Alex Salem when he first rehearsed with us for “Ghostbusters,” in which he played Winston Zeddemore.  In “Die Hard,” he plays Al Powell (or, as our audience referred to him regularly, Carl Winslow) with aplomb. This week, he takes some time to talk with me about listening to David Cross.
