Episode 201 – Dave Willis and Casper Kelly on Comedy Is Not Pretty and Class Clown

cov_201_sd

It’s a first for the podcast – two guests talking about two different albums.  We explore the manifold differences and similarities in the influences on the two guys who bring you Adult Swim’s Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell, and it’s a genuinely great time.

Episode 180 – Billy Merritt on George Carlin – Take-Offs and Put-Ons

COV_180_SD

You’ve seen Billy Merritt on numerous shows.  If you’re lucky enough (like our own producer, Mike), Billy has taught you improv at UCB.  We had a great time talking about the mind-changing effect Carlin and this album had on how Billy thought about comedy.

Episode 158 – Paul Gilmartin on George Carlin – Class Clown

Gilmartin_SD

We’re back on a favorite, and not long since the last time we covered it.  I’m not sure if it’s just the demand of listening to the album more than I normally would, but the amazing Paul Gilmartin of The Mental Illness Happy Hour have a great discussion about this album, and also what it means to get the right kind of laughs, and to succeed, comedy-wise, on your own terms.

Episode 155 – Lee Camp on George Carlin – Class Clown

LeeCamp_SD

He’s a stand up, an author, and the host of Redacted Tonight.  Give his work a listen and it’ll become obvious why the influence of Carlin was so important to him.  We discuss Class Clown and how important it is to have not only a point of view and a voice, but a reason for being on stage.  Not all stand ups necessarily agree that their work should have a point beyond laughter, but Lee’s a strong proponent of having one, and we have a great discussion about the purpose behind his material.

Episode 124 – Dean Haglund

FB_HaglundWhen you first saw him as Langly on The X-Files, you had no idea that behind that facade was a man who has heard Swedish comedians covering George Carlin.  Yes, covering a Carlin bit.  Dean Haglund talks about his early comedy influences, his first albums, learning stand-up and studying comedy, and also gives us an LA history lesson.

Episode 115 – Dan Pasternack on George Carlin – Take Offs and Put Ons

Pasternack

Consummate comedy nerd, comedy vinyl collector and comedian in his own right (yes, he had a song played on Dr. Demento’s show when he was 11), Dan Pasternack is here to talk Carlin’s “Take Offs and Put Ons,” not to mention putting most people’s comedy stories to shame with one encounter involving both George Carlin and Stan Freberg.  Enjoy, and be sure to read his articles on McSweeney’s about his comedy vinyl collection.
