Episode 77 – DISCovery, Episode A – James Urbaniak Introduces Sara Pocock to An Evening with Mike Nichols and Elaine May

Cheech Tom & Chong

Sara Pocock proposed the idea that someone should introduce her to something brand-new, at least to her.  A classic she’d never heard of, or never new was important enough to listen to.  She picked the authority – James Urbaniak.  James picked one of the best – An Evening with Mike Nichols and Elaine May.  Because I can’t think of a better title, I’m calling this subseries “DISCovery.”  Submissions for better titles are welcome.

Also, coming back this week is bittersweet.  A few weeks ago, my wife lost her father, Tom Smith, who you’ll see with Cheech and Chong above in a photo I finally got to see when I was putting together the photos for his memorial.  Naturally, I was hoping I’d get to hear more of the story behind the photo from Tom himself, but I do know he got to interview two of my heroes.  My picture with Philip Proctor, though, was of an experience Tom coveted, himself, so we got to share our love of comedy that way.

Episode 76 – John Dimaggio on George Carlin – Class Clown

John DimaggioThis week, the Bender head comes off the bookshelf for the man behind the shiny metal ass.  John DiMaggio is not only the voice of Bender, and of Jake on Adventure Time, but he’s also a huge Carlin fan.  We sat down and talked a mutual favorite album, Class Clown, and I had the good fortune to watch and hear him imitate Carlin.  Amazing stuff.  John’s also the producer and narrator of the new documentary “I Know That Voice,” about almost every voice actor you’ve ever heard.  I Know that Voice will be on demand from December 1-21st, and available on iTunes starting January 7, 2014.

Oh, and in this episode, I also come up with an idea for the greatest a capella group ever.

Episode 75 – Daniel Weidenfeld on Chris Rock – Bring the Pain

Daniel Weidenfeld co-executive produces the wonderfully surreal “China, IL” on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim with the show’s creator, Brad Neely.  Daniel wanted to talk about Chris Rock’s “Bring the Pain,” and we had a great time doing it.

Episode 74 – Omar Dorsey on Martin Lawrence – Talkin Shit

Omar DorseyYou’ve seen Omar Dorsey on Eastbound and Down, in Django Unchained and you’ll see him on Fox’s upcoming series rake.  He wanted to talk with me about Martin Lawrence’s album “Talkin’ Shit,” because, as Omar sees it, Martin was the first real hip-hop comedian.  We had a great time talking, and we also got to bring up Sheneneh.

Episode 73 – Jack Dolgen on 2000 Years with Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks

jack dolgen

Jack Dolgen has created the music for a ton of music and TV shows you’ve doubtless seen, and he’s also co-writer/co-producer on many of Rachel Bloom’s music.  I wanted to get the other mind behind “Fuck Me, Ray Bradbury” to sit down and talk about his influences.  Lucky for me, he picked my heroes.

Episode 72 – Derrick Beckles

Derrick Beckles

Derrick Beckles dropped by to talk Canada, humor, Canadian humor, Rusty Warren and his comedy influences in general.  It was a hell of a lot of fun.  He’s the host and creator of Adult Swim’s alternate-universe entertainment show Hot Package, which you should watch Thursdays at 12:45 AM.

Episode 71 – Brian Hall on The Simpsons Sing The Blues

Brian Hall

Brian Hall is a co-host of The MovieFilm Podcast and he’s the first to request The Simpsons, in any form.  While “The Simpsons Sing the Blues” isn’t exactly what you’d call their “A Material,” it’s a great snapshot of how this small nothing of a show became popular seemingly overnight, so much so that it had to be capitalized upon with a dance craze and a song co-written by none other than Michael Jackson.

Episode 70 – David Melville on Gerard Hoffnung – Hoffnung at the Oxford Union

MelvilleDavid Melville is the co-founder of LA’s Independent Shakespeare Company.  I interviewed him just before an hilarious performance of As You Like It at this summer’s Griffith Park Festival.  It was a ton of fun, even if the audience got a bit rowdy toward the end.  Also, listen to the end of the episode for a clip of David as Touchstone.

Episode 69 – Jeff Abraham Opens Up the Abraham Comedy Archive

Jeff AbrahamYou might not know his name, but if you’re a comedy record collector, he’s a name to remember.  A man after my own heart, with a love of Hollywood history as rich as his love of rare and interesting Comedy, Jeff Abraham takes me into his comedy record vault and we listen to some doozies.  All local comedians who you’ve likely never heard of, I can only apologize for their lack of polish.  With one special exception at the end, which is neither exclusively local nor unheard of.

Episode 68 – Matt Buchholtz on Bill Cosby – Revenge

BuchholtzMatt Buchholtz was the first person I interviewed for my documentary Lords of Soaptown in 2008.  He’s also hilarious, does a ton of great sketch comedy, and is part of the Crit Juice podcast, which you don’t need to be a D&D person to enjoy thoroughly.  It’s great.  He wanted to talk some more about a Bill Cosby album we haven’t touched on yet.  Smart move.
