We don’t have a new episode week, so let’s go back a year. In July of 2014, the wonderful Brendon Small stopped by his own place to talk about Steve Martin’s “Let Get Small.”

Live via vocal telegraph this week is none other than Peter Shickele, aka P.D.Q. Bach, J.S. Bach’s only forgotten son. We discuss his career, his invention of the hardart, and even go back to the early days of record collecting, where nabbing a bunch of singles was your only option. It was an honor and an insane amount of fun to speak with him.

Jeremy Carter is here to talk Cosby. Not just Cosby, but Himself. A seminal album, and one that has stuck with a number of a certain generation maybe more than his earlier work, wonderful as it is. This is Bill Cosby’s dad “character,” which is a stretch as a term in this case, as refined as it ever got. This is frustrated dad refusing to give up, but still accepting his fate.

The host of “The Green Room with Paul Provenza” and “Set List” here in LA, sits down with me to talk about Robert Klein. Not only is this a slice of the 1970’s, it’s Klein’s progressive voice without entitlement, but with a heavy degree of acceptance that being progressive is just the way it is. We also discuss Paul’s first time on stage – at a Robert Klein show. That story is worth the whole hour.

Andrés du Bouchet is not only a hilarious stand up, but he writes for the funniest guy ever – Conan. We talk about a number of albums this episode, but the big one is the SNL Cast Album. Though I didn’t have it in hand the day of, the clips you’re hearing in this episode are from a vinyl rip. Go check out his comedy, watch Conan, and definitely listen to this album. I’ve put almost all of one sketch at the end, because its (for me) the greatest sketch on there, and one of my favorites of all time.

Mark McConville is now the second member of the Superego team to drop by Fort Awesome Studios, and we cover a mutual favorite album – the soundtrack to This Is Spinal Tap. It’s always a special pleasure to not only cut in music clips, but to speak to the musically educated and skilled about mixing music and comedy. Mark was awesome, and so is special guest Eilon Paz, author of the book “Dust & Grooves,” which chronicles his interviews with fascinating vinyl collectors – his interview is after the closing the theme as a bonus.

Dave Waite‘s comedy album Hotdoggin’ comes out tomorrow, August 12th on Stand Up! Records. Today, he talks about one of his favorite albums, chosen at random from a few contenders – George Carlin’s A Place for My Stuff, which was a ton of fun to revisit. Stand up mixed with sketch is hard to do right, and while Carlin does, it’s easy to see why few people have done it right since – namely, it’s hard to be that brilliant as a stand up and then also spend the time to translate your unique voice into sketch. Awesome stuff.
On a sad note, the world lost Robin Williams today. Listen toward the end for two clips from my favorite Robin Williams film, Good Morning, Vietnam.

His film What If?, starring Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan opens in limited theatres today, and nationwide Friday, August 15. Elan Mastai is Canadian, and isn’t afraid to change his accent to subvert the US and take it over. Again, his film opens today.
He also picked an awesome, self-referential, super-meta comedy album from 1981 – Bob and Doug McKenzie’s (aka Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas) “The Great White North.” It’s a piece of punk comedy that, like all successful punk things, got super popular. Unlike some punk, though, this still has legs. Enjoy, and check out What If?
