Episode 71 – Brian Hall on The Simpsons Sing The Blues

Brian Hall

Brian Hall is a co-host of The MovieFilm Podcast and he’s the first to request The Simpsons, in any form.  While “The Simpsons Sing the Blues” isn’t exactly what you’d call their “A Material,” it’s a great snapshot of how this small nothing of a show became popular seemingly overnight, so much so that it had to be capitalized upon with a dance craze and a song co-written by none other than Michael Jackson.

Episode 70 – David Melville on Gerard Hoffnung – Hoffnung at the Oxford Union

MelvilleDavid Melville is the co-founder of LA’s Independent Shakespeare Company.  I interviewed him just before an hilarious performance of As You Like It at this summer’s Griffith Park Festival.  It was a ton of fun, even if the audience got a bit rowdy toward the end.  Also, listen to the end of the episode for a clip of David as Touchstone.

Episode 67 – Ben Acker on Bruce McCulloch – Shame-Based Man

Ben Acker

Ben Acker is partially responsible for one of the best live shows in LA, The Thrilling Adventure Hour, as well as the podcast of the same name/partial content.  He was kind enough to sit down with me TWO MONTHS AGO to talk about Bruce McCulloch of Kids in the Hall and his album “Shame-Based Man,” an art-house comedy piece by a mainstream, yet brilliant, comedy writer.

Episode 66 – Rachel Bloom on Please Love Me

rachel bloom 2a

Rachel Bloom is back!  This time, we delve into her influences as we discuss her album, “Please Love Me.”  I won’t stop raving about it, so don’t stop me.  I love the shit out of it, and I was lucky enough to be an extra in the video for “Jazz Fever.”  It was a ton of fun doing this episode – so enjoy!

Episode 65 – DC Pierson on Barenaked Ladies – Gordon

pierson big2

This week, the incredibly awesome DC Pierson drinks out of my stein and indulges my pretentious side by humoring me.  We have a great time talking about how awesome Barenaked Ladies are/were, and what it’s like to obsess over something as a kid.

Episode 61 – Sara Pocock on Paul F. Tompkins – Freak Wharf

sarapocockThis week I talk with the insanely talented Sara Pocock!  You need to look at her art – she draws a lot of comedians and illustrates some great characters from podcasts (Fourvel from Comedy Bang Bang! being a personal favorite).  We talk about Paul F. Tompkins, the fact that she’s WAY more a live comedy nerd than I am, and what it’s like to work with the comedians you admire.

Episode 58 – Eric Martin on Weird Al – UHF

Eric Martin

This week I sit down with the mahogany-voiced Eric Martin of the This American Wife podcast and Web Series.  It’s quickly becoming one of my favorite things, so it was exciting that Eric picked a Weird Al album we haven’t done before.  Apologies for the hot sound in advance, but I think it’s worth it.

Episode 56 – Dan Bakkedahl on Rodney Dangerfield – Rappin Rodney

bakkedahl

This week I finally get to talk to one of my favorite character actors, Dan Bakkedahl, about one of his favorite albums – Rodney Dangerfield’s “Rappin’ Rodney.”  I’d never heard it before, and was surprised at how well a strong set-up/punch routine still works.  Sure, it’s dated, but it still works.  Do yourself a favor and pull yourself out of the mindset that what you love now is the best.  At one point, this was.  And it was still old-timey then.

Episode 55 – Andrew Bergman on Blazing Saddles

AndrewBergmanMy favorite film of all time is Blazing saddles.  In fact, there used to be a subway/bus poster for the film hanging where I now hang my LPs.  There’s plenty around Fort Awesome Studios to indicate my love for this film and anyone who had anything to do with it.  So, only a few months after getting to play Hedley Lamarr onstage, I was honored to speak with Andrew Bergman by phone from New York about my favorite film, which started from a kernel of an idea, turned into a novella that I desperately want to read, and became a classic, sparking off the career of my  favorite director.  I had a wonderful time, and Andrew was a super-classy, nice, insightful writer – everything you’d hope.  Enjoy.
