Episode 173 – Wayne Federman on Victor Borge – Borge’s Back

COV_173_SD

Watch Wayne Federman do stand-up and the first thing you think is not Victor Borge.  Look anywhere and Victor Borge probably won’t be your first thought.  But Wayne made a compelling case to listen to Borge’s Back! and it was worth the listen.  It’s a ton of fun – like a clean Rodney Dangerfield, without the dirty words.

Episode 170 – Giulia Rozzi on Rodney Dangerfield – No Respect

COV_170_SD

Giulia Rozzi’s next album, True Love, comes out this Friday, February 12.  She’s hilarious and wanted to not only discuss Rodney Dangerfield, but an Italian kids song about having to take a pee.  It’s a fun time.

Episode 169 – Arnie Kogen and Patric Verrone on Its a Gas and Mad Magazine

COV_169_SD

Arnie Kogen has written for so many of our greatest comedic minds and voices, but perhaps the one that screeches loudest is MAD Magazine.  Patric Verrone helped give us Futurama and returns to the show as an expert who owns every issue of MAD Magazine.  This week, we use the MAD Magazine insert record “It’s A Gas” to discuss the history of MAD itself.

Episode 168 – Andre Jacquemin on Producing Python

COV_168_SDAndré Jacquemin has not  only produced almost every Monty Python album, he’s also written some of their music.  We have a blast talking about great Monty Python moments, as well as some album packaging concepts that never quite materialized.

Episode 167 – Brock Wilbur on This Is Spinal Tap

BrockWilburSDIt kinda feels like Brock Wilbur has been on before, but he hasn’t.  This is our second time covering the soundtrack to This Is Spinal Tap, and this time we also meander into the world of other “fake” bands and his own family history with music.

Episode 164 – Caitlin Barlow and Kathryn Renee Thomas on Monty Python Sings

BarlowTHomasSD

Two of the creators and co-stars of TV Land’s Teachers, which premieres January 13th, picked my favorite Python album, and the thing that really got me addicted to Monty Python in general.  Monty Python Sings is drenched in the best the group has to offer, musically, and we break it down, track by track.  We also talk about how bangable Monty Python are individually.  Also, before you ask, yes, it had a vinyl release, but in Europe, so it’s impossible (so far and for me) to find.

Episode 162 – Zach Sherwin on An Evening With Groucho

SherwinSD

As a fan of Epic Rap Battles of History, I had to have Zach Sherwin on.  He’s a brilliant performer, and a great writer.  I’m always pleasantly surprised when someone who could easily (and understandably) have had an entirely vinyl-free listening experience decides they want to not only pick some vinyl I love, but an artist I absolutely adore.  I don’t talk about how important Groucho is to me in this much, because it isn’t about me, but Zach’s curiosity does allow for a pretty great conversation about Groucho, and any cross over he might have in the world of hip-hop.

Episode 153 – Dan Telfer on Bob and Doug McKenzie – The Great White North

Telfer_SD

He’s an amazing stand-up, a writer for @midnight, and he was kind enough to pull this week’s album up on his phone since I gave away my vinyl to the last guest who picked it as that week’s album.  Dan Telfer breaks down his love of “The Great White North” and sketch comedy in general, and then, because we haven’t had the discussion on the show yet, we talk Cosby.  Because we both used to love him, and we both have our ways of expressing our change of heart.  It’s a good episode.

Episode 150 – David Melville on George Formby

COV_Melville_SD

The Independent Shakespeare Company’s own David Melville returns, to again open up our comedy minds to the works of George Formby.  Still a respected name in English comedy, his work never quite traversed the ocean sufficiently, so it’s time for some mind expansion.  Formby’s double-entendre-laden ukulele tunes are played with an unusual skill on an instrument mistakenly seen as simple, especially given its current ubiquity.  Enjoy some fun tunes and, if you’re in LA, go see the Independent Shakespeare Company at Griffith Park this summer.

Episode 149 – Craig Rowin on Weird Al – Off The Deep End

Craig Rowin SDCraig Rowin of Your Pretty Face is Going To Hell drops by (and so do I, this was “on location” in Hollywood) to talk about Weird Al’s perfectly-timed “Off The Deep End.”  Now, before you write me an e-mail about this being a CD-era album, I’d advise you to go to the Netherlands.  Where they released this album on vinyl, apparently.  Craig squeaked it, but I’m glad he did.  This has one of my all-time top Weird Al songs, and we had a blast talking about (individually) meeting Weird Al, as well as, in his case, working with him.
